VideoCabaret is a 50-year-old Toronto theatre company built from political nerve, formal rebellion, and the belief that Canadian history is not fixed, polite, or past. Since 1976, it has made politically incisive, media-aware Canadian theatre that integrates design from the earliest stages of creation — fusing theatre, live video, installation, rock music, television aesthetics, satire, and civic provocation into a performance language entirely its own.

The company's work interrogates national mythologies, political structures, and media culture through an integrated design aesthetic. It creates new Canadian theatre that is aesthetically rigorous, collaborative, and built through deep exchange between writers, performers, designers, and technicians: high-performance theatre, politically awake, formally adventurous, and alive to the ways culture connects us. That work speaks to now because it was always aimed at now.

andy moro

Artistic Executive Director

Andy Moro was with VideoCabaret through the early years at the Theatre Centre, Factory Studio and Mainstage, eventually co-designing and rebuilding the backroom at the Cameron House where the History plays ran through the twenty aughts. He redesigned the famous Black Box for the road, taking it to Stratford and Soulpepper.

Moro is a multi-award-winning director, scenographer and multi-media/installation artist.  With partner Tara Beagan (Governor General's Award and Siminovitch Laureate) he co-founded and directs ARTICLE 11. Their work together includes In Spirit, Rise Red River, Ministry of Grace, Deer Woman, Mujer Venado, DECLARATION, Reckoning (stage and film) and the documentary The Road to Hasalala Danxalax (with Marion Newman and the Chan Centre).  

ARTICLE 11 is currently developing Beagan's newest script, Squeaky, with VideoCabaret and Downstage (Calgary), and a LatinX production of Mujer Venado (Deer Woman) with Aluna and Factory Theatre. Up next: a production workshop with Necessary Angel of their most ambitious work to date, Nice White Lady.  

As a scenographer, Andy works coast to coast to coast and internationally. Recent projects include Wagner's Ring for Edmonton Opera and work for Pacific Opera Victoria and City Opera Vancouver; the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Atlantic Ballet and Ballet Kelowna; Kaha:wi Dance Theatre, Dancers of Damelahamid, A'nó:wara Dance Theatre and DanceWorks; and the National Arts Centre, Tarragon, Neptune, Vertigo, Prairie Theatre Exchange and the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre and more.

Danika Royer

Production Coordinator & House Technician

Danika Royer is an emerging Theatre Artist, from Scarborough Ontario. Predominately focusing on Prodction Management and Sound Design, she has found herself drawn to creation projects, and new Canadian Plays.

Dani is a recent graduate of the National Theatre School of Canada’s Production Design and Technical Arts program, she smiles at the face of the unknown and readies herself for new adventures and challenges.

Through her time at the School, Danika has Production Managed, Technical Directed, Sound Designed, Video Designed and Stage Managed alongside the mentorship and collaboration of theatre artists across many different disciplines and backgrounds. Some notable mentions being Thomas Morgan Jones (Director, Yerma), Deanna H Choi (Sound Coach/Composer, Yerma), Andrea Lundy (PM Coach, Midsummer Night’s Dreame, Last Night I Dreamt), Amelia Scott ( Video Coach, Neverending Story) Jovanni Sy ( Director, Neverending Story), and Neha Ross (SM Coach, Macbeth, Cerberus).

Danika is reminded everyday that the work you do inside and for your community is what makes you human. She uses her art as a tool to build up the people around her and build the support structures for her better tomorrow. Through leadership and practical theatre she will continue to strive for interconnectivity and allyship of the marginalized communities in and around the Canadian Arts and Culture Sector.

Director of Community & Audience Engagement

Kiera Publicover (she/they) is a classically trained, award-winning actor, playwright and emerging producer. A Canada Council for the Arts grant recipient, Kiera works primarily in new play development and is currently developing new work alongside her company Arrowwood Theatre Company - an indie theatre company founded in 2018 that offers affordable training to emerging artists and collaborative, community based theatre.

Her work was featured in the 2024 Stratford SpringWorks Festival, and has been workshopped in theatres across Toronto. Alongside the Guild Festival Theatre, Kiera has produced many exciting and interactive events and activations at the Guild Park and Gardens as their Event Manager.

As a performer, Kiera’s work has been featured on stages across Ontario, including: Marguerite in Isle of Demons (Guild Festival Theatre); Annie in The Birds (Bygone Theatre); Agnes in Weston: Then and Now Festival (Crossroads Theatre); herself in Canada’s Next Chopped Model Minority (Paprika Festival); herself in Contactless (Soulpepper’s QueerFutures 2099) and more.
